DIY: Magazine Storage

Last weekend when celebrating my daughter’s 13th birthday, there was a single gift in the pile that was not entirely new (and could not be exchanged in any store…). She needed some storage for her magazines and catalogs, which usually would lie scattered on the floor. She previously had a wall-mounted one, but let’s face it, she’s not going to pick them up from the floor and arrange them nicely there. She loves the big piles directly on the floor, but that is also a bit impractical when the vacuum cleaner is dropping by once in a while. It had to be practical and fit in the graphical style that she likes, so the result was a painted wooden box with mounted wheels – just to throw magazines in, and scroll to the desk, the sofa bed or wherever she wants to put it.

//

The wooden box was one that has been mounted on wheels a long time ago, but it has just been collecting dust in the basement pretty much since we moved in about seven years ago.

Here is a small guide to what I did:

Bungalow5 DIY Magazine Storage Instructions

1 ) I once painted the box white, but it was a bit worn and was yellowish by the knots in the wood, because I did not treat it properly with a coat to cover the knots as you should do if you want to paint untreated wood – at least when you want to paint it white! But now it was already painted, so the only thing I did was a thorough cleaning and some sanding.

2 ) Mounting the wheels on the bottom. I recommend some soft rubber wheels (instead of the hard plastic ones), so the box can be moved silent and does not scratch the floor.

3) I chose to paint with black blackboard paint, since I love the matte black expression when the paint has dried. Please be patience – the paint glistens much as wet (and it looks like s…) but it is going to be matte. And no, a single layer is not enough. Count on at least 3 layers with sanding in between.

4) I wanted to have some kind of decoration, so I chose an easy and simple triangle, which I marked with masking tape.

5) Seal the edges by painting on the edge of the masking tape, then the edge will be sharp when the tape are removed.

6) Finally paint with the contrasting colour and remove the tape when the paint is dry.
