My Hong Kong Hotel Experience at Warehouse-to-hotel Conversion Ovolo Southside

Hong Kong is the perfect destination for a short break, even if you fly in from Europe or the West Coast, which was exactly what we did last month. I flew from Copenhagen and Mr. LA from… LA. With time in the air and time difference we both landed a few hours apart on a Tuesday and departed again Sunday, which is plenty of time to go to most of the major spots around the city and get a good feel and sense of the city, even as a first time visitor.

I have a few posts planned the next weeks and will kick it of with the most important thing – a good hotel. After visiting Asia (Beijing) last year, we were certain that we wanted to stay at a decent hotel, especially with a long flight, you want to quickly be able to kick of the jetlag and not deal with Airbnb’s not living up to par.

We got a good deal with funky warehouse-to-hotel conversion Ovolo Southside via Design Hotels. I had no experience with the city prior to the trip, so had no idea if the location was good or not. Turned out, it was perfect for us. Not right in the city center, but just a 5-minute walk from the easy to use metro. Everyday we were beat after miles of exploring, so a quieter area was ideal for us.

From the minute we walked into the lobby we feel right at home and our corner room with 180 degree views did us good and made up for the fact that the room itself was not the biggest I’ve stayed at, but spacey enough.

We were determent to explore the HKG food scene, but after a few misses, even trying out one of Conde Nast and Michelin’s top picks, which turned out to be a total miss, we ended up trying the hotel restaurant Kömune one night. That became two… which eventually turned three. The food wasn’t particular Asian, nevertheless just what we craved for (we did try some duck tongues and pigeons for lunch out and about). I highly recommend and still crave Kömune’s hummus and guacamole, both absolutely perfect.

There you have it – my Hong Kong hotel experience. I’ll return with more about my HKG visit soon.
