All By Myself at QT Sydney

Merging two of Sydney’s grandest and most prominent historical buildings (the State Theatre and Gowings on Market & George Streets) into one hotel has involved a painstaking restoration process culminating in the creation of a bold and unique hotel experience. I spent my last three days in Sydney at QT Sydney, a newly opened designer hotel.

To ensure impact on arrival, QT Sydney’s art consultants, designers and architects worked to bring the history of both buildings together through an energetic collection of original artwork and cutting edge graphics.

A thing that really made my day, when I dragged my sad white Scandinavian ass to the nearby Andrew Boy Charlton Pool was the lift. A journey with tailored lift music. (Solo travellers get “All By Myself” aka. me, while couples can hold hands listening to love songs aka. not me.)

Sydney-based designer Nic Graham has created a lobby with a wide selection of designer furniture filtered in with awesome vintage findings from eBay, charity shops and flea markets. Not like every other lobby you’ll find, no, this one you actually want to spend time in. And if not there, you’ll love drinking in the bar of the hotels amazing restaurant, Gowings, together with local Sydneysiders.

The design team have played to the obvious eccentricities of the historical buildings, helping to create an edgier environment. Every element of the rooms have been designed specifically for the space by stylist Anna Roberts; from the design of wardrobes, bedheads and carpets, to the minibars, glass cabinets and materials. I spent more than half the time of my stay in the big white bed enjoying the stunning view of Sydney’s skyline; well that and the huge free in-room movie selection – and if you twisted my arm, I might admit, grudgingly, that I did try on the leopard sleeping mask more than ones and ate ninja bread men from the minibar.
