Coffee Talk with Craftspeople featuring Kasper Thorup

Monday has quickly become my favorite day of the week, mainly because it means releasing a new episode of my Coffee Talk with Craftspeople, made in collaboration with Nespresso. In a world dominated by mass-consumption and throwaway culture, I wanted to take a closer look at why authentic craftsmanship is better and what’s behind the design process.

I’ll take you through four episodes visiting four different, very talented, craftspeople. I teamed up with Nespresso and meet each of the four craftspeople taking a different coffee maker and new delightful and recyclable coffee capsules.

In this week’s episode, I visit Kasper Thorup while he is working on a new chair design. Thorup is a Danish modern furniture designer based in Copenhagen’s Frederiksberg. He became a household name in Denmark after appearing on Danish television in a primetime design show last year. Since the show his focus has been on developing his new dining chair, Noel, manufactured and produced in Denmark.

Thorup loves to experiment and wants to know his designs inside out, which means he might get help from different artisan professionals, but he still perfects the finished works himself from his studio and workshop in Frederiksberg. He is extremely professional, and his designs are like no other, he draws inspiration from the grand old Danish design fathers, utilising traditional artisanal techniques in a contemporary way, each is a striking modern piece of design and still making sure his designs are 100% his own.

In his own studio he selects the materials and develops his pieces, some taking days or weeks to complete. Testing their durability and tolerance, mastering new skills, he experiments and spends hours trying, despite bruises and breaks, to find the perfect balance that places on the principles of suspensions, all while juggling all other parts of running a furniture design studio all on his own.

Remember all episodes are in Danish, but all with English subtitles, so just make sure to activate it, when you hit play. Now, go make a cup of Nespresso, sit back and enjoy. And please hit that like button and fell free to leave a comment. Thank you.

Paid partnership with Nespresso. Thoughts and opinions are 100% my own. Thanks for supporting collaborations that I am excited about and that have kept Bungalow5’s doors open.
