It is relatively new that Ikea is working with external designers on collections. In 2015 they launched an exclusive 30-piece collection designed by Ilse Crawford, which cleared the shelves even before hitting them. You could not afford to be hesitant, something I predict with be the same for the forthcoming collection designed by Danish Hay.
I’ll be honest with you, I am not particular fond of Hay. And I’ll tell you why. As much as I love the Danish design approach, Hay is really not. Or at least not when it comes to a lot of their accessories, which is found on shelves somewhere in Asia and just mass-produced with a Hay label. I bet you can find most with other brands too – exactly the same design, just with another ”designer”. Anyway.
I LOVE the new collection for Ikea. it is sleek, contemporary, very classic and have both Ikea and Hay DNA written all over it. It is not super fashion forward, some pieces do remind me of something we have seen before, like the daybed/couch, which actually do look a lot like a padded version of Ilse’s 2 years ago and the small round coffee tables, hmmm! I do, however, really like the new take on the shelving unit, the other 2-seater couch and bar trolley.
Finally, I predict the new pattern and color versions of the classic blue Ikea bag will be a new design icon and carried around everywhere by everyone – or the lucky ones that do get their hands on one.
The HAY x IKEA Ypperlig collection will be released in October 2017.
