Home Pics: Week 15

//

The Easter holidays has now finally arrived for me. Wonderful and much needed in relation to some relaxing but (unfortunately) also in relation to cleaning and decluttering, as most of my day today was spend doing. Once you have started, it’s really not that bad, and there’s plenty of time to think about stuff and decor.

I have always had great difficulty with the phrase “a house / flat / room / thing with soul”. I hear and read it constantly, but it seems so wrong to me. Buildings, spaces and things haven’t got any soul in my world. They can be beautiful, magnificent, come with a great story etc., but soul? I think soul belongs to humans. Therefore, I was so pleased to read the article on Mogens Lassen’s villa in the latest issue of Danish Rum. Not only a fantastic and beautiful house, but the article also quoted Mogens Lassen of saying that architecture is not about style, but about space, which acts on the soul. That makes sense to me! The greatness of architecture and design is not about the soul of wood or bricks, but about how a home and its decor affect us. Whether we are into heirlooms, stylish design or a colourful universe, there is always something that feels more right for us in decor – and that’s exactly why our tastes are different.

I also had time to reflect on my own decor, and how I’ve moved too far away from my own functional basis. How much stuff do we actually need? I dare not even write, for example, how many bowls I counted when I was cleaning the kitchen. Now I’m finished, and there’s probably someone else who actually needs a bowl! My ambition (and those ones can get big when you suddenly have several hours available with your own thoughts) is to work with the idea of functionality and needs when I take a look on the rest of the house. Should I really reach a point in my life where I can really get rid of all that’s unnecessary?
