Basically so many of the Danish design brands are looking the same. A fact, that I hear people say, especially internationally, over and over again. And I really have to agree – so many brands are doing stuff in the same colours and using the same well-known designers over and over again. Don’t get me wrong, I love what many of them are doing, but when 5 brands use the same 5 designers, they are bound to end up looking the same – especially because they all use Kvadrat to upholster their shell chairs. I miss that more brands creates an identity and a universe, which we can associate them with. I also miss more separation. Most brands more or less follow the same trends.
A new Danish brand has started their quest for the Holy design Grail. And it looks promising. Million is a modern Nordic furniture and lighting brand that mixes classic Danish flair with a host of international aesthetics. The two founders carpenter and designer Claus Jakobsen and graphic designer Jens Kajus have just launched their first collection together. And though there are some similarities to other Danish brands, I really do like the influence you see from contemporary French, Japanese and American designers.
Another thing I need to applaud is that the founders have great ambitions fostering future talents, which you already see with their first collection. Young Danish designer Terkel Skou Steffensen (a huge new talent on the Danish design scene, also check out his work for Skagerak) have created the Ease tables and the Hug Coat Hanger for Million.
Welcome to Claus & Jens. Congrats on the new brand. I wish you all the best of luck in the future, keep up the good work and please for God’s sake don’t end up looking like all the others.
