Roomstore

I have managed to lure the two cool gentlemen behind Roomstore out into the spotlight. They are usually a little more discrete in nature – like some kind of design world secret agents. They have established a kick-a.. company in just a few years. With agencies on brands like Tom Dixon (beautiful lamps, sigh!) and DCW (double-sigh for their Lampe Gras-series). In addition they have done numerous interior designs, like the Zoo Bar in Copenhagen and Supermai in Odense. One thing is certain: they have not come about their success in their sleep, and their drive and passion for design can be felt at several meters distance. And so it has been every time I’ve met them at trade shows and events in the last five years. Roomstore today has 10 employees, and they are here to stay (thankfully :)!). I have asked them about their wildest experiences and their next project.

Who is Roomstore?

Roomstore is a classic wholesale company with import rights to a number of international design brands in either Denmark or Scandinavia. The portfolio of brands spans from Italian Magis to French DCW with for example their lamp series Lampe Gras. We also have the English designer Tom Dixon’s program of lamps, furniture and accessories, and the new Danish brand Nevvvorks. The owners are Thomas Qvortrup and Nikolaj Meier and the company is now run from the headquarter in Sønderborg. In addition, we have a showroom / sales office in Copenhagen.

And what are you doing – and who does what?

Nikolaj is the structured type and has a nose for optimizing and streamlining the resources that are available. He is the CEO and is responsible for the daily operations of Roomstore with the many parts that need to be tied together – everything from sales, customer service, showroom, warehouse and logistics to PR and communication with our suppliers. Thomas is the founder and as the entrepreneur he is, he is always looking for a good business opportunity. Thomas has spotted all the brands that we represent and each brand usually has a good history that comes along with them about how Thomas has negotiated the deal. Thomas works best without a title – so we just call him Thomas.

What has been your wildest experience with Roomstore?

Oh – there are many. The fact is that it NEVER gets boring doing business with Thomas, because he if any can contribute to great experiences that draw on the entire range of emotions. We were both very disappointed when we were told from DCW that they had chosen a different importer. But Thomas did not take no for an answer and tried one last time to convince DCW that we were the right partner in Scandinavia – two days later we were drinking champagne with a DCW contract in our hands.

Do you disagree – and what do you do then?

We agree on most things – but we also have issues that we disagree on. Our advantage is that we have known each other for 20 years so we know each other for better or worse. When we disagree, we talk about it, and usually we find a way that we both feel is right for the company.

Have you ever wanted to give up?

Thomas: No never!
Nikolaj: Yes.

What is your next project?

We have a fairly large project in the pipeline that we cannot say anything about yet. But we have a new brand in the portfolio for the fall, which we think will be very successful and probably will raise an eyebrow or two.

What do you dream about?

We dream of creating Scandinavia’s largest company within sale and distribution of design brands.
