INTERVIEWS

Sofie Refer

The diligent reader of Spot On knows that I have a great passion for lights and lamps. It also means that I automatically become fascinated by designers who master the art of creating a lamp that stands out. And this is what Sofie Refer does. You may know her from her first company, Refer + Staer? Now she is on her own, but creating light is still her thing. Not only does she design and produce under her own name, you can also find her lamps and furniture in several design companies. See what she told me about her wildest experience, and how to easily create a personal style.

What do you love most about your job?

The creative process, where ideas are translated into physical form and your dreams are expressed, is magical. I work with my assistant back and forth between hand drawings and computer renderings – sometimes I linger for a long time with an idea before it lands. Other times I get unexpectedly quickly pleasantly surprised.

What is the biggest challenge in your career?

My impatience, but at the same time it affects my drive in a positive fashion. I started my own business, when I studied at the Danish Design School, where I got to produce glass and vases in Poland. Later I started to design and produce lighting. I could not wait for a manufacturer to ‘spot me’ – so it was better do it myself.

What has been the craziest experience at your job?

With my former company, Refer + Staer, we went to Australia to start up cooperation with distributors. They held two huge celebrations for that occasion, one in Sydney and one in Melbourne. It was pretty cool to see that Down Under was so fond of our lamps.

What is your best tip for a personal style?

Decorate with repetitions, and have more of the same thing, either in the same room or distributed in several rooms. It can be anything, such as lamps, side tables, carpets or tableware products. Repetition creates peace, coherence and signals energy.

My home …

… has to be a framework for peace and harmony. Therefore, I prefer getting furniture that means something to me, and which remains once they have found the ideal place. I have just moved in with my boyfriend in a new apartment. We moved in without ant furniture at all, and it is wonderful to walk in the open spaces and imagine and choose how our home should unfold.

What is your next project?

Professionally I started with the design of ‘one of’ and limited editions of Chandeliers of my own production. It really is my dream and I am pleased with how things are taking shape. For my new home, I am currently designing a hallway bench, various side table’s, and storage boxes, all in smoked oak.
